At Desert Autoplex in Mesa, Arizona, we believe that one of the things that really makes a vehicle shine and stand out from the rest is its wheels. Keeping your rims clean not only tells people that you take pride in your RV, but it keeps them looking good and well protected throughout the year as well.
The first thing you should keep in mind is that using abrasive cleaning products on your wheels can greatly diminish the quality and cause serious damage to the wheel. Be sure to read the instructions on any wheel cleaner you are using. Before you begin, always make sure that your rims are cool to the touch. The rims, rotors and brake pads generate a lot of heat, so if you start your wash while everything is still hot, you may run into some problems. Some types of brake pads can be damaged by the use of some cleaners, so be sure to do your research before purchasing any wheel cleaner. Always choose a cleaner that is appropriate for the type of wheels you have. Roughcast aluminum and chrome can withstand stronger cleaners than coated, painted, or anodized wheels.
There are several spray-on tire and wheel cleaners on the market that will remove most of the brake dust and road grime from rims with just a hose. A long round wheel brush and some good old fashioned elbow grease will help to get rid of all the nasty buildup and make your wheels look shiny and new.
We recommend that you use a good quality microfiber towel after you are done with your wash, as they tend to clean all the brake dust and grime off the wheels very nicely. For added shine and protection, try using a wax or polish on your wheels after you have washed them. This will create a barrier that will protect your wheels against the harsh elements out there on the open road.
