Wheel Care 101

At Desert Autoplex in Mesa, Arizona, we believe that one of the things that really makes a vehicle shine and stand out from the rest is its wheels.   Keeping your rims clean not only tells people that you take pride in your RV, but it keeps them looking good and well protected throughout the year as well.square_1

The first thing you should keep in mind is that using abrasive cleaning products on your wheels can greatly diminish the quality and cause serious damage to the wheel. Be sure to read the instructions on any wheel cleaner you are using.   Before you begin, always make sure that your rims are cool to the touch.  The rims, rotors and brake pads generate a lot of heat, so if you start your wash while everything is still hot, you may run into some problems. Some types of brake pads can be damaged by the use of some cleaners, so be sure to do your research before purchasing any wheel cleaner.    Always choose a cleaner that is appropriate for the type of wheels you have. Roughcast aluminum and chrome can withstand stronger cleaners than coated, painted, or anodized wheels.

There are several spray-on tire and wheel cleaners on the market that will remove most of the brake dust and road grime from rims with just a hose. A long round wheel brush and some good old fashioned elbow grease will help to get rid of all the nasty buildup and make your wheels look shiny and new.   square 2

We recommend that you use a good quality microfiber towel after you are done with your wash, as they tend to clean all the brake dust and grime off the wheels very nicely.  For added shine and protection, try using a wax or polish on your wheels after you have washed them.   This will create a barrier that will protect your wheels against the harsh elements out there on the open road.

If you have any questions regarding how to properly care for your wheels on your car or recreational vehicle, then feel free to give us a ring here at Desert Autoplex and one of our friendly and highly knowledgeable team members gladly assist you.   Happy cleaning and we look forward to seeing you at our dealership soon!

Camping Season Has Arrived!

Well it looks like the harsh winter air has finally subsided, and now that spring is in full effect, it would be the perfect time to round up the family and head out in your RV for a good old fashioned camping trip!

Desert Autoplex has the finest campers and Rvs in the state, and you will enjoy countless hours of fun and excitement while cruising down the open roads in search of the perfect camping grounds.   But before you venture out on the highway, let’s make sure your RV is ready to go and that you have all the necessary items to bring along with you.camping 2

Before hitting the road, take a walk around and through your RV to make sure you have put everything away properly, and if you have an awning make sure that it is securely fastened before you travel.  To avoid blow-outs and to optimize gas mileage, make sure you have the proper tire pressure and that your tires are in good shape as far as tread goes.  Also do a quick check of your fire extinguishers and smoke detectors.

Should you decide to ditch the RV for a night or 2 and enjoy the spoils of nature, make sure you bring along the necessary items that will ensure your safety, comfort and convenience.   One of the utmost important things to have of course is a sleeping bag.   A lightweight sleeping bag should suffice being that it shouldn’t be too cold at night right now, but if you are the cold blooded type then you might want to invest in a heavier bag.  Make sure you bring along a durable and reliable tent and that you pitch camp before dark.

Before choosing a camp site, be on the lookout for wasp nests and other insects and bugs that might infest the area.   If you’re hanging out near vegetation, it’s a good idea to wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants and to apply a good amount of insect repellent.  Watch out for poison ivy as well, and throw away all garbage and leftover food far away from your camping ground to avoid animals such as foxes, raccoons and bears.    In case an unforeseen emergency arises, be sure to bring with you a first aid kit and other survival tools such as a compass, knife, canteen, matches and flashlight.

A list of camping tips wouldn’t be complete without mentioning food and water.    Make sure the fresh water tank in your recreational vehicle is clean and topped off, and that you work out exactly how much food you will need per person for you trip.   Canned foods are always a safe bet such as soup, chili, and tuna, as are deli meats, bread, hamburger meat, hot dogs and eggs.  You don’t want to have to worry about cleaning up too much on your trip, so bring along lots of paper plates and plastic utensils along with plenty of napkins and trash bags.

Remember that the amount of effort you put into adequately planning your trip will determine the success and your enjoyment of your camping experience.    Feel free to call us here at Desert Autoplex if you have any questions regarding how to properly prepare for your camping trip, or if you are interested in purchasing or financing one of our top-of-the-line vehicles.

Happy camping, be safe and don’t forget the marshmallows!

RV Fire Safety Tips

Having a warm and cozy fire going while camping outside next to the RV you just purchased from us here at Desert Autoplex is truly one of the simplest pleasures in life that we all enjoy.  Having a fire suddenly break out inside the cabin of your recreational vehicle however is something we all would like to avoid, so here is a quick list of things to check on regularly and keep in mind to ensure that a fire doesn’t start and burn down your pride and joy.  fire 2

Make sure all of your detectors like smoke, propane and carbon monoxide have fresh batteries in them at all times and that they are in proper working condition.   These are your first line of defense against fire damage within your vehicle and should be maintained on a regular basis.

Fire Extinguishers

It is vital that you always have several fire extinguishers onboard.   We recommend that you keep one near the entrance/kitchen area, another in the bedroom, and a third inside an outside storage compartment.   This way an extinguisher is always handy and you have backups if needed.   Make sure that you properly train yourself and those riding with you on how to use an extinguisher and that you maintain and replace them when necessary.

Propane Systems

Check your local laws regarding propane regulations and have them inspected and checked for any leaks.   If you ever smell the odor of propane, vacate the vehicle immediately and call the fire department, and if possible turn off the external propane tanks.desert 2

Plan an Exit Route

It is very important to have an escape route planned in case of a fire or any other type of emergency for that matter.   Always have a plan in place before you hit the road, and be sure that you are able to open your windows all the way and that the cabin’s walkways are free from obstructions and combustible items such as gas tanks and oily rags.

Electrical Circuits

Be sure that you aren’t overloading your electrical circuits as RV wiring is only rated to handle so much electric current.  Try not to plug too many things into one outlet, especially high draw appliances or heaters.  Occasionally feel the electric outlet plates and see if they are getting hot. If you feel they are excessively warm to the touch, call an electrician immediately and have them checked out.  It is a good idea to pick up a wattage meter and test how much current you are currently drawing as well as a good surge protector.  People near campfire in forest

Take Care When Cooking

Always use caution when preparing meals both in and out of your vehicle.  Keep your stove area clear and never leave a burner on when not present.   If cooking with a barbeque or campfire, make sure you are at a good distance so that flare ups aren’t able to reach your RV.

At Desert Autoplex your safety and the safety of your loved ones is our top priority, so please keep a list like this one handy at all times and feel free to call us with any questions or concerns regarding fire safety.

RV Maintenance 101

The last thing you want to have happen while on a road trip or family vacation is a breakdown or some other kind of unfortunate and inconvenient mishap, so we at Desert Autoplex have put together a quick list of things to check on with your camper or RV before venturing out on the open road.RV lifestgyle

You want to make sure that your rig is in tip-top shape before heading out, and that calls for proper maintenance and a thorough pre-trip examination of your recreational vehicle.

Your vehicle’s engine is obviously one of the main things to check first, so be sure to inspect all of the stud nuts around the carburetor and on the manifold for tightness, and also see that the carburetor is clean and the linkage pivot points are lubricated and free moving.   Check all bolts and screws around the fuel pump and its lines for tightness, and the drive belts on the fan, alternator and air conditioning should have the proper tension and be free from cracks.   Having the sufficient amount of oil is also very important, so make sure you change it and the oil filter regularly. Always be on the lookout for oil leaks under your camper as well.airtream

Your RV’s cooling system is a vital component, so have it flushed and drained at least every two years, refilling the system with a good glycol-base coolant with a rust inhibitor.  The radiator, radiator hoses and water pump should be checked for leaks and loose connections as well.

Have your brakes, shock absorbers and wheel alignment looked at to ensure safety and good handling, and check your wheels for dents, lug nuts for tightness and tires for sufficient tread and pressure so that you don’t experience a blowout on the highway.

Flush your water system with fresh water and drain it periodically, make sure your gas system is topped off and fully functional and most importantly, ensure that your battery and electrical system is in good shape and that it there is enough juice to last you throughout your trip.

For any questions or concerns regarding the proper maintenance of your camper or RV, feel free to call us at Desert Autoplex in Mesa, AZ and one of our friendly and knowledgeable team members will gladly assist you and help get you rolling!
